Kickboxing Western New York Techniques

Kickboxing in Western New York is a great way to lose weight and get in shape. This exercise is a type of martial arts that was originated in the Far East. The purpose was to use the arms and legs to defeat an opponent in a match. Today, individuals partake in kickboxing, not only as a competitive sport, but also as a means to get in shape.

Kickboxing consists of two prominent moves: kicking and punching. The basic upper body move is called a jab. This is when the person holds the arms close to the body with the palms in a fist. The person then quickly punches outward and withdraws promptly. Repeating this move several times can increase upper arm strength.

Another move is called an uppercut. This is when the individual swings the arm in an upward motion, as if they are trying to hit the chin of their opponent. To burn more calories, an uppercut is often done rapidly for at least three sets of 12 repetitions. In some cases it is also combined with simultaneous squatting.

Some lower body routines include the roundhouse, front and side kicks. For the roundhouse the person will stand lift their leg and quickly bend the knee and kick the air. Front kicks consist of simply lifting the front leg and swiftly kicking forward at the knee. A side kick consists of lifting the leg to the side. While balancing on the opposite leg, the person will kick. For an added benefit the person can stay balanced on the standing leg and repeat the side kick eight to ten times before switching sides.

There are many cardiovascular benefits to this exercise. Individuals can burn up to 600 calories for every half hour depending on how intense their work out is. Form is very important to prevent injury, and movements are intended to be done rapidly for ultimate effect.
